His was an original voice and he may not have always got it right and he may often have been extremely non-pc (but all the better for that in age when people seem afraid to point out that “The Emperor has no clothes”). I especially approve his attack on the terrible dumbing-down of the BBC especially in relation to documentary programmes. Who has not shouted at some fatuous presenter on television – standing in front of a painting waving his arms about and obscuring the very object at which we are wanting to look ?
(it is a long time since a really good presenter of a programme about the arts (Neil Macgregor was one such) was used by the BBC).
