Snowdrops in Shropshire

Suddenly the snowdrops have burst into flower along the lanes and byways of Shropshire in England. Great drifts of them cloak every likely bank along the roads although this clump was photographed by Anthony J Sargeant in the garden of his Shropshire home on the 29th January 2018. There is a local story that there was a man who in the 19th Century, or early 20th used to roam the lanes in the area planting bulbs in the hedgerows.

Shropshire landscape in early spring photographed by Tony Sargeant

Anthony Sargeant took this photograph from his Shropshire (UK) home looking down the valley towards Wenlock Edge on the 5th March 2016. It is early spring but we hardly seem to have had a winter this year – but the snowdrops are out all around the house in the lanes and roads as well as the garden – no obvious leaves on the trees yet but the buds are there ready to burst into life.

This interesting and decorative rug was bought by Anthony Sargeant in auction in the Netherlands. It is is overall in good condition, lowish but evenly worn pile, and side cords and one end needs securing. In structure it is Baluch but the design shows influences of southern Persia – a very pleasing rug. Recently sold to a good friend for what was possibly cost price – but that is what you do for friends.

Tony Sargeant took this photograph of a cock pheasant on the lawn of his Shropshire (UK) home one frosty morning in February 2016. The countryside in Shropshire has many Pheasants and it is not unusual to see them wondering around the garden – until the dog or cat chases them off of course.

Anthony J Sargeant mourns the death of Brian Sewell – he will be greatly missed.

His was an original voice and he may not have always got it right and he may often have been extremely non-pc (but all the better for that in age when people seem afraid to point out that “The Emperor has no clothes”). I especially approve his attack on the terrible dumbing-down of the BBC especially in relation to documentary programmes. Who has not shouted at some fatuous presenter on television – standing in front of a painting waving his arms about and obscuring the very object at which we are wanting to look ?

(it is a long time since a really good presenter of a programme about the arts (Neil Macgregor was one such) was used by the BBC).

Anthony Sargeant quotes from Sophocles

“The longer days store up many things nearer to grief than joy  ……. Death at the last, the deliverer.                                        Not to be born is past all prizing best.                                            Next best by far when one has seen the light                             is to go thither swiftly whence he came.”
